Hand Pieced 60 Degree Hexagon Stars w/Donna Thomas

Hand piece with Donna Thomas in this one session class and learn how use a template to cut and then piece your stars by hand. Beginners welcome.

In this class you’ll learn how use one template to cut 60 degree diamonds as well as hand piecing to sew a perfect 6-pointed star with set-in seams. This is NOT paper piecing, but rather basic, straight-forward, simple hand piecing. Go home with the first star finished in what will hopefully become a universe of stars. You’ll also earn how to fussy cut little motifs from prints as you find them. Each star is made from its own pair of prints.

The sample is just one of many sizes and shapes of table mats that you can make.

The instructor will provide a sampler card of needles and the diamond template for you to keep, as well as some other supplies for you to borrow.

Bring an assortment of medium to dark prints and lighter background prints. Each piece should be no smaller than 4” x 6”. A total of 19 combinations are needed for the sample table mat shown but you can make a smaller candle mat with just seven stars. You’ll work on 1-3 stars in class.

• Silk pins (Clover blue and yellow glass head pins are the best), small scissors to snip threads, needle threader, seam ripper
• Aurifil 80 wt cotton thread in a neutral color such as tan, gray or cream. Aurifil’s 80 wt thread comes on a wooden spool. First City has this thread in stock.
